Gerard van Honthorst: The Merry Fiddler (1623)

(Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands)

This is a very cheerful painting. A man with a fiddle and a berkemeyer comes towards us. He is leaning from a window in order to clink glasses. A very lifelike and happy portrait. This 'person-leaning-from-a-window' was also a popular type of painting in the 17th century. This painting is from 1623.
