Carel Fabritius: The Gate Guard (1654)

(Staatliches Museum Schwerin, Schwerin, Germany)

Carel Fabritius was a pupil of Rembrandt. After his study at Rembrandt's studio in Amsterdam, he moved to Delft. He was killed during the explosion of the Delft gunpowder magazine on 12 October 1654. Most of his paintings were destroyed during this explosion so only a few of them have survived. This is a nice genre scene by Fabritius. Painting from 1654.
