Gustave Doré: Christ leaving the Praetorium (1867-1872)

The French artist Gutave Doré is best known for his woodcuts and engravings for books like The Bible, The divine Comedy, Raven, Don Quixote and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Doré true passion however was painting. unfortunatly these paitings were not well recieved by other artist (mainly because his lack of formal training). This massive painting of 6x9 meter shows Christ leaving his trial. Pilate gave his verdict to hand over Jesus and orders the crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus and Mary both glow with light while the crowd is almost in darkness. The cross is already waiting for Christ at the bottom of the stairs. Painting from 1867-72
