Edwin Austin Abbey: The Quest for the Holy Grail, Part 11 - The passing of King Amfortas (1895)

(Boston Public Library, Boston, Massachusetts, USA)

After many adventures Galahad finaly returns to the Castle of the Grail. Again the procession of the Grail passed before him. Grown wise with knowledge and suffering, Galahad asks the Question - Galahad asks for the meaning of the procession (the first time Galahad remaind silent and was arrogant for presuming to know meaning of the procession). The Question heals Amfortas and cleanes him from sin, allowing the king to die. An angel bears away the Grail (the red object - the grail is covered in samite) from the castle. Painting from 1895.
