Pere Borrell del Caso: Escaping Criticism (1874)

(collection Banco de España, Madrid, Spain)

A nice painting from the Spanish artist Pere Borrell del Caso (1835–1910). the piece is a good example of the 'Trompe-l'oeil' technique (Trompe-l'oeil is French for 'deceive the eye') in which the artist creates an optical illusion. In this case del Caso the painting is a depicted as a real-life window through which the painted boy steps into the real world. The technique was already known in ancient Rome and was frequently used in 'dome paintings'in churches and palaces in the Renaissance and in Dutch paintings from the 17th century. Painting from 1874.
