Anton Raphael Mengs: Portrait of Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine as Grand Duke of Tuscany & Maria Luisa of Spain (1770)

(Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain)

A set made by the German artist Anton Raphael Mengs (1728–1779). The man on the left is Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, the future Holy Roman emperor Leopold II (1747-1792). He was the son of Empress Maria Teresa and of Francis I and the brother of Marie Antoinette (wife of king Louis XVI of France). Leopold served as grand duke of Tuscany from 1765 until 1790 when he succeeded his brother Joseph II as Holy Roman emperor until his death in 1792. The most significant event during his short reign was the Declaration of Pillnitz (27 August 1791) in which Austria and Prussia would intervene if king Louis XVI of France was threatened (the French revolution broke out in 1789). This decleration would eventually lead to the French Revolutionary Wars.
The woman on the right is Maria Luisa Bourbon of Spain (1745-1792), daughter of king Charles III of Spain and Maria Amalia of Saxony. She married Leopold by proxy on 16 febraury 1764 and the couple got 16 children of which Francis would succeed his father as the last Holy Roman emperor. Leopold is 23 on this painting, Maria Luisa is 25. Painting from 1770.
