Anonymous: Portrait of a Lady in Red (1460-70)

(National Gallery, London, UK)

A painting by an unknown Italian artist from Florence. Identity of the sitter is unknown but the painting gives a good example of the high forehead fashion of the medieval period. The beautiful woman emphasized her high, round forehead which was achieved by shaving or plucking the eyebrows to a barely-there line and reducing the hairline at the top of the forehead. Painting from 1460-1470.
