Another famous cityscape by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). The formal name of the painting is 'a view on houses in Delft'but it is more commonly known as 'the little street' (Dutch 'het straatje'). The painting offers a view on what is now Vlamingstraat 40-42 in Delft. The house on the right was occupied by an aunt of Vermeer: Ariaentgen Claes van der Minne, the half-sister of the father of Johannes Vermeer, and her three unmarried daughters (the woman in the doorway is perhaps Ariaentgen ). Ariaentgen earned her money with selling of tripe - the doorway on the left-side of her house was called the 'tripe gate' (Dutch: penspoort). Vermeer’s mother and sister also lived on the same street, diagonally opposite of this house. Painting from 1657-1658.
