Nicolaes Lastman & Adriaen van Nieulandt: The Civic guard company of Abraham Boom and lieutenant Oetgens van Waveren (1625)

(Amsterdam Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

A painting by the Dutch artists Nicolaes Lastman (1585 – 1625) and Adriaen van Nieulandt (1587-1658). This painting shows several civic guard members from Amsterdam. During the Dutch war of independence (1568-1648) in 1622 an attack by the Spanish army was anticipated on the town of Zwolle. As the Dutch troops in Zwolle already were directed to the provinces of Overijssel and Friesland, other Dutch troops were directed to Zwolle. The town of Amsterdam provided a unit of 230 civic guard members which was recruited from several units. The Spanish attack never materialized and the civic guard unit was send back to Amsterdam after some time (the unit arrived at 26 September and left Zwolle on 24 October). These 9 civic guard members commissioned a large painting to celebrate their time at the front line and their honorable mission. Present on the painting (from left to right):
