Jürgen Ovens: The regents of the Oudezijdshuiszitten- and Almonershome in Amsterdam (1656)

A painting made the Dutch artist Jürgen Ovens (1623 - 1678). This painting shows the board-of-directors (in Dutch 'regents') of the Oudezijdshuiszitten- and Almonershome in Amsterdam. This organization was responsible for the care of poor who were not housed in a hospital or a hostel but still had their own home (hence the name ' huiszitten' or 'homesitters'. Care was provided in form of the distribution of bread, butter, cheese, peat and money. The painting was made for the new office of this organization and was a part of an arrange of painting for the regentsroom: a portrait of the board-of-directors at that time and several painting related to the charity-work of the organization. Depicted are Jan Selyns, Marten Cantert, Cornelis Hoppesack, Mr. Pieter Ernst van Bassen, Jan Lansman en Mr. Willem van der Does. The standing man in the background without a hat is a clerk.
