Maarten van Heemskerck: Man of Sorrows (1532)

(Museum of Fine Arts, Gent, Belgium)

A painting by the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). This altarpiece from the Saint Corneliuschurch in Mechelen shows ' the man of sorrows', a depiction of Christ showing the wounds of his passion. Christ is shown on a cloud, perhaps a reference to the Ascension, and two angels. The latin text above Christ reads 'ECCE REX VESTER' - Behold your king'. Painting from 1532.
