circle of Rembrandt van Rijn: Lamentation over the Dead Christ (1650)

(John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Saratosa, USA)

A painting by unknown 17th century Dutch artists. This painting shows the virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Joseph, John and other who are mourning the death of Christ. Although the painting has the signature of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) at the bottom center, this is probably a later addition made in the studio of Rembrandt. The entire piece is perhaps a collaboration of several students, each painting a different part of the piece - the differences in handeling the faces points to this theory. Painting from 1650.
