Enrique Simonet: And she had a heart! (1890)

(Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain)

A painting by the Spanish artist Enrique Simonet (1866-1927). The body of a young woman who had drowned herself lays on a table inside an autopsy room. The pathologist has just removed the heart of the women and is apparently contemplating it. Whether the woman has committed suicide out of shame, an Ophelia or some other reason is unknown. Painting from 1890.
